Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain and Griffin

p. 166: mid-5/65, Rev Adams returning from visit to V Corps headquarters, reported that Sheridan, who was to go to Texas, “and be a visible challenge to the French and Austrian incursion in Mexico, it was reported that he wanted the 5th Corps to go with him, having declared that they could ‘outmarch & out fight anything he had ever seen.’ But Gen. Griffin was afraid of losing command of the 5th Corps, having angered Meade with his outspoken criticism. On the night of May 20, Chamberlain visited Sheridan to interceded for Griffin, returning with Sheridan’s word that Griffin had nothing to worry about.” Ch. 13, Ft. 14 “Providence’ chapter.
